“Antibacterial” sounds automatically safer—but it isn’t that simple. FDA removed numerous antibacterial wash ingredients from the U.S. consumer market after manufacturers failed to prove long-term safety and superior effectiveness over plain soap and water. Concerns surrounding certain antibacterial chemicals have included hormonal effects and bacterial resistance.
For routine handwashing, plain soap and running water usually do the job. Don’t buy “antibacterial” simply because the word sounds stronger.
