Sugary drinks do more than deliver empty calories. Regular intake is linked with excess weight, diabetes risk, fatty liver and cavities. During childhood, they can also displace milk and other mineral-rich foods at the exact time children are building bone. Longitudinal research shows calcium intake during childhood predicts later bone mineral status.
Make water the everyday drink. Keep soda, sweetened juice drinks and sports drinks from becoming routine lunchbox hydration.
