Ask Better Questions Than “Do You Do Drugs?”

Natural Focus
A child can truthfully answer “no” to “Do you do drugs?” while still being surrounded by vaping, THC gummies, pills or drug-selling at school. Prevention works better when parents have frequent, specific conversations. SAMHSA recommends talking early and often and maintaining an open relationship in which children know their parents are paying attention and care about their safety.

Tip of the Day
Ask questions that reveal the environment around your child: “Are kids vaping in the bathrooms?” “Have you seen THC gummies?” “Do students sell cartridges or pills?” “Has anyone ever asked you to hold something?” “What drugs do kids at school think are harmless?” Listen before reacting. A child who expects immediate anger may hide information you genuinely need to know.

Spiritual Focus
“Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” — James 1:19

Prayer Suggestion
Ask God for patience to listen carefully and for a relationship in which your child feels safe bringing difficult things to you.
