A child does not necessarily have to search for a drug dealer to encounter one. DEA has warned that traffickers and recruiters have approached young people at schools, after-school activities, public transportation and through social media, text messages, chat rooms and other electronic communications. Recruiters can be strangers, familiar adults or even other children.
Tip of the Day
Include drug prevention in your conversations about online safety. Ask whether strangers or older teens ever message your child offering money, products or “easy” jobs. Ask whether classmates use social media to advertise vapes, gummies or pills. Teach your child never to carry a package, hold something for someone or accept an offer simply because it came through a friend or familiar account. Most importantly, create a plan: if something feels wrong, your child can call or text you and know you will help first and deal with the details afterward.
