Fluorescent tubes and CFLs contain mercury. When one breaks, some mercury can escape as vapor. A single bulb contains a small amount, but mercury is a toxic metal and unnecessary inhalation should still be avoided—especially around children, whose nervous systems are developing.
If a fluorescent bulb breaks, clear the area, ventilate it and follow EPA cleanup guidance. Don’t immediately vacuum the broken bulb.
